A blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of your body’s deep veins, generally in your legs, causing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Deep vein thrombosis can cause limb pain and inflammation, but it can also strike without warning. If you have certain medical disorders that alter how your blood clots, you may get DVT.

• Blood thinners. Anticoagulants, often known as blood thinners, are among the most common treatments for DVT.
• Clot busters are substances that dissolve clots. These drugs, also known as thrombolytics, may be administered if you have a more dangerous type of DVT, or if previous treatments aren’t working.
• Compression stockings. If your veins are prone to clotting, these can help increase blood flow.

A deep vein thrombus (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep within the body. The most typical site for a DVT to develop is in the legs. A blood clot in the veins of the legs is a medical emergency that can result in life-threatening complications.

DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, is a life-threatening condition caused by a blood clot in a deep vein. Swelling, discomfort, and sensitivity, especially in the legs, are common symptoms. Immobility, hormone therapy, and pregnancy are all risk factors.

The standard way of diagnosing the presence of a deep vein thrombosis is ultrasound. The ultrasound technician may be able to see if a clot is there, where it is in the leg or arm, and how big it is. It may also be feasible to determine whether the blood clot is new or old.

The effects of a blood clot in the leg are typically easy to notice. Swelling and tightness in the leg are early signs of deep vein thrombosis. You may get a throbbing cramp-like sensation in your leg. When standing or walking, you may also feel discomfort or tenderness.

A pulmonary embolism can occur in around 1 out of every 10 patients who have a DVT if it is not addressed. A pulmonary embolism is a life-threatening illness that produces shortness of breath that can develop gradually or suddenly.

If you suspect you have a blood clot or are experiencing any of the signs and symptoms, go to the emergency room. Swelling of the legs, ankles or feet are symptom of DVT. In the legs, you may experience discomfort, heaviness, soreness, hurting, throbbing, itching, or warmth.
